Hi All!
Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on the St. Joe Development plans in Franklin County.  As you all are aware,  they plan to build 499 homes in the Turkey Point area between St Teresa and Lanark Village.   They have indicated plans to build a marina adjacent to the Alligator Harbor Aquatic Preserve across from the FSU Marine Lab on Hwy 98.   As we all know,  that is NOT a good place for a marina.  They were on the Planning and Zoning Board agenda last night with a proposal to make numerous changes to the Franklin County Comp Plan.  I had thought they were only requesting a land use change from agricultural to Residential mixed use.  Bill Hartley of Riverkeepers notified me that there was an entire page of text changes that could have detrimental effects for the county.   Thanks to the work of Representative Will Kendrick, County Commissioner Cheryl Sanders, and Dave McClain and Bill Hartley of the RiverKeepers ---- the St. Joe Arvida representative  withdrew their application minutes before the P&Z meeting was to begin.  Hopefully they will now work with the citizens, public officials of Franklin county, and environmental groups  to design a development that can be beneficial to all involved.......including the environment.   Rep Kendrick wrote a wonderful letter expressing his views to the Planning and Zoning Board,  and has worked diligently to assist St. Joe in doing this development responsibly.  Cheryl Sanders has spent many hours trying to assure that the bay and the clam aquaculture is protected from the environmental damage a marina could cause.   Dave and Bill of RiverKeepers met with St. Joe up until just before the Planning and Zoning Board meeting last night in an attempt to convince St Joe to reconsider their proposal.   The combined efforts of these people has hopefully succeeded in moving this process to one of open communication and working together toward the thoughtful and responsible development of our precious county.
